Trio Belt-Idler Drive Turntable Model KP-7021 for sale.
Trio is better known as Kenwood outside of Japan. The Kenwood L-07D Direct-Drive Turntable is regarded as one of the top DD turntables of all times; it showcases the engineering expertise and heritage of Trio-Kenwood in designing & making good turntables.
Less well-known outside of Japan is that Trio-Kenwood also made a number of turntables with Belt-Idler Drive mechanism. The most famous turntable of this genre is the Thorens TD124, very much sought after with consequent high prices…

As the above photos show, the Trio KP-7021 is a well-engineered and made turntable with solid materials, robust mechanisms and parts. It has been given a thorough service and maintenance, with the main spindle and idler drive wheel spindle stripped apart, cleaned, lubricated and re-assembled. New thrust pads made of Litnum Vitae [self-lubricating and much more durable than Teflon or Delrin] are put in and immersed in synthetic oil. The motor bearing oil baths have been topped up [soaked up 2 fillings]. The rubber idler wheel has been refreshed with several coats of rubber renue & the original silicone belt has been cleaned.
The turntable comes with a smoked acrylic cover which has some crazing due to age and a few scratches. There is a small crack at one of the corners.
A Shure M44G cartridge with a still sharp stylus is mounted on a Sony head shell. The tonearm and its rest post have been adjusted for correct height.
In its current state, the KP-7021 plays records with no discernible mechanical noises. Rotation of the platter is very smooth, level, and stable – providing the firm foundation for the tonearm and cartridge to work their magic.
Perception of sound quality is very subjective. In my opinion, the KP-7021 imparts very good dynamics to the sound, PRaT of the music are there in spades. The background is also very very quiet when the records being played are clean, allowing fine details to come through. The KP-7021 does not cede any sonic ground to a heavily tweaked Lenco L75 that I’m using.
This is a manual turntable and there is no platter brake. It’s a Japan domestic unit that runs off AC100V mains and you would need a step-down transformer to use the turntable in Singapore. To some, these could be minor inconveniences of operating this turntable.
