These pair of speakers have undergo a transformation for vintage lovers with no compromise of quality. 3 way speakers are excellent rendition of soundstage and midrange sweetness. But vintage speakers from lesser brand often omit out the most crucial components of a 3 way system, the crossover.
The quality of components in these vintage speakers are not poor to begin with. Having a new crossover redesigned for the purpose of true 3 way system often gives them an astonish uplift in sound quality with improved musicality and separation. What was previously a single, poor and simple capacitor to cut off the frequencies is now a totally hand-soldered crossover board with much much higher quality of capacitors and inductors. The precise frequencies at which each driver is dedicated to play resulted in a smoother output than the original stock.
Importantly, another major upgrade is the tweeter. The one from the original form is never a proper tweeter. A silk dome tweeter was replaced to add that bit of sparkle and air to the sound.
On the exterior front, the cabinet has been totally reskinned with authentic black walnut veneer instead of the original pvc faux black wood vinyl. Entirely handmounted, the surfaces have been given a few light sand downs to give it a smooth texture, before being finished with two coats of matte varnish for protection against moisture and light spills.
In its original form, there was totally no binding post or whatsoever to connect any of your own speaker cables, instead to only rely on the included and attached thin black and red wires. A proper pair of gold plated binding posts have been added at the back for multiple way of connections and improved its functionality to a great degree.
This pair of speakers is best suited hooked up to a SS amp due to the still-vintage parts of the midrange and woofer drivers that can perform more efficiently with the dynamism offered.
Already warm-sounding, pairing them with tube amps may add more warmth and suffocate the details. But that shouldn't stop anyone who like the warmth sound of this speakers when paired with tube amps.
The smooth vintage signature sounds best with jazz, blues, vocals and pop genres. The bass and mid bass are distinct and tight, but as the cabinet was structurally lacking in depth, bass lovers please do not expect huge thumping bass. Vintage design speaker drivers are never meant to produce the deepest of notes in almost all of them without being 8 inch and above.
Finally, a great deal of efforts have been made in the crossover design and craftsmanship to create this totally unique pair of speakers you can find nowhere else in the world. There is not much profit from speaker restoration that we are beginning to work on, considering the great amount of time needed in designing and testing the crossover to the carpentry work. It is purely a passionate aspect of our business to restore the glory of vintage speakers and make them look even prettier and sound better as much as we can. Of course there will still be imperfections here and there which we have tried to minimise which is sometimes but inevitable in any vintage restoration. It is like a form of art that should be appreciated and we hope you can feel the same. Thanks.
